Angling for Relief is a 501(c)(3) founded by then 12 year old Jake Klopfenstein to provide some therapeutic diversion to pediatric cancer patients and their families, through fishing. This idea came from watching his friend, Ryan, who had always been so kind to Jake, battle cancer. Ryan spent most of his 18-month battle in the hospital or homebound. Jake’s passion is fishing, and he wanted to bring his favorite, relaxing activity to kids like Ryan in hopes of helping them forget their diagnosis and just be a kid, even for a short time.

Through the two programs we have developed, children will be able to learn to fish from their home/hospital using our “Dry Fishing Kit” and educational materials. The kit contains a dock sized fishing pole with a soft weight at the end (no hooks).Kids can cast and retrieve to practice their skills and get ready for the fishing from land at our Fishing is Relief events.

Fishing is Relief is our events in which the kids then have the opportunity to put their skills to the test on the water once they are cleared by their medical team/parents to do so. At these events, the entire family is welcome to join in the fun and find some fishing relief, too. All children are given Gillz hats and shirts which protect them from the sun, brand new fishing poles, all the bait and tackle needed, and a skilled angler volunteer to teach them to fish, and keep them safe.

We are approaching our third year of helping pediatric cancer patients and their families find some relief through fishing. Our reach has extended into multiple states with many more to come. Sadly, pediatric cancer is not rare. Every day, 43 children are diagnosed with cancer. With the help of our community, we can bring some fishing relief to these children and their families. How can you help? Support us on social media, facebook and Instagram and talk about our organization to others.
